Bulwer is a small town on the Australian sand island Moreton Island in the state of Queensland . The place is about 40 kilometers east of Brisbane . During the 2016 census, there were 49 inhabitants in Bulwer.

On Moreton Island there are three places Kooringal in the south, Cowan in the middle and Bulwer in the north of the island. Bulwer is on the west coast of the island on Moreton Bay . Bulwer Beach stretches for 8.5 kilometers from Comboyuro Point to Cowan Point .

There is a large area of ​​forest in the north of the village. Moreton Island National Park protects the unpopulated part of the island .

population

During the 2006 census, 70 people lived in Bulwer. Of these, 47 were male and 23 were female. There were ten families in Bulwer at that time. There were 54 condominiums.

history

Pilot station in 1899

The first lighthouse was built at Coomboyuro Point north of Bulwer in 1848 . A pilot station was also set up in Bulwer in order to be able to guide the ships safely into Moreton Bay. The place was named after the British parliamentarian Edward Bulwer-Lytton .

On the beach just off the coast of Bulwer, there are three shipwrecks that sank in the 1930s. These are the Alexander Gow , Kallatina and Hopewell . There are two historical tombstones less than a kilometer south of Bulwer. A child who died at sea in 1883 is buried under one.

There was a school in Bulwer until 1909.

Transportation and facilities

Bulwer can be reached by ferry from Scarborough , which covers the distance of 30 kilometers between the two places in 75 minutes.

Bulwer serves as a starting point for exploring Moreton Island. The place consists mostly of private holiday homes. On the beach there are some clubhouses run by fishing clubs. The following roads lead from Bulwer or to Bulwer:

  • An unpaved road connects Bulwer with the Blue Lagoon lake on the east side of the island
  • A path leads from Bulwer to the Comboyuro Point campsite in the northwest of the island
  • The short Bulwer Bypass bypasses southern districts and leads to the road from Bulwer to Blue Lagoon

There are two shops, a café and five accommodations in Bulwer.
