In 1802 the explorer Matthew Flinders came to Moreton Bay and in the 1820s a penal colony was established in the area. As a result, more and more settlers came to the region and in 1839 the village of Brisbane was created. In 1859 Brisbane became a municipality and shortly thereafter exceeded the population of 10,000. In 1879 there were already eight administrative areas in the region, which rose to 21 by 1891 and at the turn of the millennium over 100,000 people lived in the area around Brisbane. Then in 1925 came the fundamental reform in which the districts were merged into a single City of Brisbane with around 210,000 inhabitants.
