Cornelius Bumpus
Cornelius Bumpus (born January 13, 1946 in Santa Cruz (California) , † February 3, 2004 ) was an American rock singer and instrumentalist whose main instrument was the tenor saxophone . Other instruments that he mastered were alto and soprano saxophone , flute , keyboard , organ and synthesizer .
biography
At the age of ten, Bumpus was already playing alto saxophone in the band of his school in Santa Cruz, and two years later he began performing in public. After that he led his own rhythm and blues band for seven years .
In 1966, Bumpus performed with Bobby Freeman for half a year . In 1977 he then joined Moby Grape , on whose album Live Grape he played the next year. In 1979 he became a member of the Doobie Brothers . After the Doobies split in 1982, he made his solo debut Clear View that same year . Beacon followed in 1984 .
In 1989, Bumpus returned to the Doobie Brothers, but separated from them the next year. In 1993 he joined Steely Dan and released his last solo work Known Fact on Palmetto Records in 2000 . On February 3, 2004, Cornelius Bumpus died of a heart attack while on a flight from New York City to California .
