The Bundaleer reservoir is a small reservoir at Spalding in South Australia , Australia.
It is about 160 kilometers north of Adelaide and about 120 kilometers southeast of Port Augusta .
purpose
The Bundaleer Reservoir was built between 1898 and 1903 to supply water to a large area from Snowtown to Port Wakefield . It was one of several major irrigation projects in response to a severe drought in the 1890s. Construction began in 1898 after the required grazing land, including the Bundaleer station, had been acquired.
The Bundaleer Reservoir was an important source of drinking water and agriculture for Snowtown , Redhill , Brinkworth , Narridy , Blyth and Port Wakefield until the Morgan Whyalla Pipeline was completed in 1944 . In addition to the Beetaloo reservoir, the Bundaleer reservoir also contributed to securing the water supply for the lead smelters in Port Pirie . Today it is used for emergency supplies.
construction
Up to 500 construction workers were employed on the construction work at the peak. Typically between 200 and 400 construction workers camped on site with horses and equipment. During construction, a makeshift settlement housed the workers. In the settlement there were three butchers, three bakers, three sellers of cold drinks, a shoemaker, a draper, a doctor's office, a police station consisting of three tents, a cricket club, a classroom made of galvanized sheet metal, tents for single men Camp for married men and several boarding houses. A Salvation Army officer rode a bicycle from Jamestown to the workers' settlement every Thursday .
Technical specifications

The water was distributed over a 25-kilometer network of concrete canals that were irrigated through two weirs .
The lake is around one kilometer wide and less than a kilometer long.
