The Bundesgymnasium und Bundesrealgymnasium Tulln is a federal high school and realgymnasium in the municipality of Tulln on the Danube in the Tulln district in Lower Austria .

history

The first years after the foundation until the "Anschluss" (1931–1938)

A sharp increase in the number of pupils at the local secondary school at the end of the 1920s gave rise to the idea of a separate middle school for Tulln . Associated with this were financial worries; the municipality should assume the personnel costs for the first five years after the foundation and provide a corresponding school building. By moving the agricultural college in Tulln out of the school building in Kirchengasse, a suitable location for the new grammar school could be found at low cost. On July 18, 1931, the Federal Ministry for Education in the municipality of Tulln approved the establishment of a Tulln secondary school at the beginning of the 1931/1932 school year. On September 17, 1931, at the start of the new school year, the municipal high school was opened with a festive church service; the first director of the school was Anton Lechner. The Realgymnasium had two classes at that time, a first and a second. Of the 62 students, 24 were girls. 54 percent of the students were from Tulln, 46 percent from outside Germany.

The financial situation at the time was described as depressing. Until 1938, the city was solely responsible for all personnel and material costs. In 1933/1934, therefore, consideration was given to continuing the Realgymnasium as a lower level, but this plan was rejected again. Nonetheless, in 1934 a new gymnasium, which was created by converting an existing building, was inaugurated, and in 1937 a second floor was built on top of the building in Kirchengasse.

The years under the National Socialist dictatorship (1938–1945)

The Matura of the first year fell in the year of the annexation of Austria to the German Empire. The written school leaving examination consisted of four subjects, for the so-called “illegals” only three. There were no oral exams. In September 1938, director Anton Lechner was recalled and replaced by Anton Gasselich. On December 21, 1938, the municipal high school was taken over by the German Reich as the “State High School for Boys”. This relaxed the financial situation, but the municipality still had to pay for building maintenance and material costs.

Anton Gasselich was replaced as director by Franz Anton in April 1940, who gave way in March 1941 to Leonhard Kupsa, who headed the institution until the beginning of 1945. As the war progressed, the situation of the institution deteriorated rapidly; the school was particularly hard hit by the heavy air raid on Tulln on December 11, 1944. 16 students of the institution died in this attack. Many students from the surrounding villages found it difficult to get to Tulln due to the train cancellations, and the school also had to deal with a large number of refugees from the " Altreich " and Vienna. On January 28, 1945, the Wehrmacht finally occupied the school building in Kirchengasse, and the then director Kupsa asked the local governor to move the school to a KLV warehouse. That did not happen, director Kupsa fell in April 1945 as a member of the Volkssturm near Sankt Pölten .

The grammar school was moved to the upper floor of the secondary school between January and March 1945. The building in Kirchengasse suffered severe damage in the last weeks of the war from Soviet shelling, but it was possible in the first weeks after the war to restore the building to such an extent that schools in Kirchengasse could be resumed at the beginning of June 1945.

The first post-war years (1945–1954)

In June 1945 classes were resumed, initially 130 students and seven teachers registered. The provisional director was Rudolf Friedl, followed on December 28, 1948 by Leopold Zaussinger as director. A sharp rise in the number of pupils forced those responsible for politics to look for a solution for the building in Kirchengasse, which had become too small. At the turn of the year 1951/1952 it was decided to build a new school building in Konradgasse, although it was not initially clear whether the grammar school or elementary school should move in. In 1954 it was finally clear that the grammar school should move to the new building, which was inaugurated on September 5 of the same year in the presence of the then Foreign Minister Leopold Figl . Initially, however, only the lower school classes were taught in Konradgasse; the upper school remained in Kirchengasse for the time being.

In the immediate post-war period, the traditional Tulln student ball, which is organized annually by the high school's Matura classes, was held for the first time. In 2019 it was held for the 72nd time.

In 1950, compulsory Russian lessons were introduced at the school; from this point onwards until 1957, English was only an optional subject from the upper school level. It was not until the school year 1956/1957 that upper school students were free to choose English or Russian as a compulsory subject. Since then, Russian has been traditionally taught at the school. At the beginning of the 1957/1958 school year, the upper school finally moved to the new building in Konradgasse.

The years in Konradgasse (1954–1980)

The new building in Konradgasse offered space for twelve classes and 330 students. From the school year 1965/1966 the grammar school became a double institution, there was now a new language branch for the upper level as well as - as before - a scientific branch. The number of pupils increased even more and with the school year 1970/1971 some classes moved into the building of the newly built vocational school in Frauentorgasse. On January 1, 1968, Johann Katzenschlager took over the position of director from Leopold Zaussinger, who had headed the school for 19 years. On December 22nd, 1971, it was decided under Katzenschlager to build a new high school on the Donaulände, the current location. In 1972 the number of students was 793, at that time six of the 26 classes were being taught in Frauentorgasse. On November 23, 1972, Franz Seyr was appointed director, who unexpectedly died of heart failure in September 1974. He was succeeded on July 1, 1975 by Roderich Geyer.

On November 23, 1974, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building on the Donaulände took place, which had been decided three years earlier under Katzenschlager. With the 1980/1981 school year, the move finally took place in the new building where the grammar school is still located today.

The years in the federal school center (1975-now)

Roderich Geyer remained director until 1995, he was replaced by Irmgard Unfried in 1995. Under the direction of Ingrid Balka, the federal school center on the Donaulände was fundamentally renovated from 2010, the reopening took place in autumn 2013.

Irene Schlager has been in office as director since December 2016.
