history

On the initiative of the Federal Ministry for Labor and Social Affairs, the “Federal Working Group of Geriatric Rehabilitation Facilities” was founded in 1993. V. “- initially with 19 members. The association's work initially focused on the development of conceptual principles and uniform quality criteria for geriatric care and the needs-based development and expansion of geriatric care structures.

In 1997 the name was changed to “Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Klinisch-Geriatrischeeinrichtungen e. V. ". The background at that time was, among other things, to want to integrate the two central pillars of the inpatient geriatric care landscape - geriatrics at hospitals and in rehabilitation facilities - more strongly in the work of the association as well as in the public image. After the further expansion of the association structures, the general assembly decided in 2008 to rename it to the “Federal Association of Geriatrics”.

The association developed geriatric care structures. In addition, the quality seal geriatrics, a special quality management process for geriatric facilities, and the certified advanced training program "ZERCUR Geriatrics" for members of the interdisciplinary team, such as members of the health professions , doctors , psychologists , social workers , social pedagogues , speech therapists, qualified gerontologists and employees of the social service, developed by the association.

The annually updated series “Coding Handbook Geriatrics” serves as a coding aid, especially for geriatric specialists. The coding manual provides information for coding in geriatrics, in addition to the German coding guidelines as well as the ICD-10-GM classification systems and the operation and procedure code (OPS).

BV Geriatrics published the White Paper on Geriatrics in 2010. It shows the care situation and needs of geriatric patients in Germany.
