The Federal Association of Thyroid Cancer - Living Without Thyroid e. V. - is a nationwide self-help organization for thyroid patients . He advocates the interests of those suffering from thyroid gland , especially those with thyroid cancer . The purpose of the association is also to promote public health by providing information and help for people who have the thyroid gland to cope better with their condition. The association conducts the specialist dialogue with other interest groups in health policy .

history

The Federal Thyroid Cancer Association was founded in its current form on April 13, 2013 in Berlin. The origins go back to a patient initiative from 1999. Out of this, the association “Live without thyroid e. V. “In 2013 the name was changed to: Bundesverband Thyroid Cancer - Live Without Thyroid e. V. The reform met an increasing demand for information, advice and support.

Board and membership

The board is elected for a period of two years. He works on a voluntary basis. Ordinary, active and sustaining members belong to the association. You can become a sponsoring member with an annual contribution of five euros or more. Association bodies are u. a. the members' council. Its task is to advise and control the federal executive board.

The "Scientific Advisory Board" is responsible for the medical field. He advises the board on medical questions relating to the thyroid. Eight doctors from various disciplines from university hospitals and institutes belong to the committee . This includes the physician Henning Dralle, director of the university clinic at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

financing

The association is financed by third-party funds, project grants from the health insurance companies , private donations and membership fees. In 2016, the German Cancer Aid Foundation provided the largest financial support with a lump sum of 140,000 euros. The share of funding from Cancer Aid in total income was already around 74% in 2013. The amount of the membership fee is at the discretion of the individual association member.

Information work

One focus of the information work is the Internet forum . In 2013, 768,340 visits were registered, which totaled almost 1.25 million visits to the forum's pages. This was an average of around 2,100 visits per day. The information work includes the free distribution of brochures and current leaflets. In addition, the German Cancer Aid Foundation provides its current specialist information from the series Die Blauen Ratgeber free of charge. The Federal Association also has a liaison office in the House of Cancer Self-Help in Bonn, which is funded by the German Cancer Aid and which houses a total of ten nationwide cooperating aid organizations.

Cooperation with Austria and Switzerland

The internet forum has led to cooperation with the regional German - speaking self - help groups from Switzerland and Austria .
