Bundwerk is a term used in carpentry and rural building culture, especially in the 19th century in Austria , South Tyrol and Bavaria . After log construction and half-timbering , the framing is one of the most common timber construction techniques . Bars are partly connected in a grid shape or diagonally crossed. This adorns the front and gable sides of farm buildings, very often the grain "barns" of four-sided courtyards .

It is particularly rich in shapes and colors in northeastern Upper Bavaria . In contrast, in Werdenfelser Land and the region around Innsbruck only a few places are consistently shaped by it.

In the years between 1830 and 1860 the Bundwerk experienced its heyday, when in addition to the carpenter, painters and carvers also artistically designed the Bundwerk, often with mythical creatures or Christian symbols.
