The vertebra is pointed and protrudes slightly over the dorsal margin. One ear is placed in front of and behind the vertebra . The front ear is about two to three times as long as the back ear. The anterior ear of the right valve has a deep, serrated incision for the byssus . The back ear is cut off at an angle, the edge slightly concave inwards. The ligament lies inside in a triangular pit below the vertebra. The lock is toothless. There is only one single, very large and almost central sphincter muscle.

The housing surface has 25 to 35 radial ribs. The ribs and also the ears are covered with small scales or thorns. The shell is comparatively thin, but still quite firm. It is gray, dark red-gray to red or brown, but also marbled and piebald.
