The attachment

The main hall , here called Yakushi-dō ( 薬 師 堂 ), is the oldest building on Shikoku Island : it dates from 1151. It is 5 × 5  Ken , here 11.41 m wide and 11.17 m deep, so it has square floor plan. It is covered with a hip roof. The hall is registered as a national treasure.

In 1572, the hall was repaired on the instructions of Chōsokabe Motochika ( 長 曾 我 部 元 親 ; 1539-1599). In 11631 it was repaired again, this time on the instructions of Yamauchi Tadayoshi ( 山 内 忠義 ; 1592-1665), the 2nd chief of the clan who ruled the province of Tosa (now Kōchi Prefecture). The roofing was extended on the front over the access stairs. In 1910 the whole building was dismantled and renovated.

Treasures of the temple

In the main hall, an Amida-Nyorai, a Yakushi-Nyorai and a Sahka-Nyorai are venerated. The three seated figures are each 120 cm high and made of the valuable Hinoki wood . An inscription was found in the Shaka-nyorai that points to the mid-11th century. It was originally made as a yakushi-nyorai. All three figures are registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan .

Between the three figures are the holy "Sunshine" ( 日光 菩薩 , Nikkō bōsatsu) and "Moonlight" ( 月光 菩薩 , Gekkō bōsatsu). They are about the same age as the Shaka-nyorai and are registered as an important cultural asset of the prefecture.

Above the parking lot there are two buildings, the Jibutsu-do ( 持 仏 堂 ) and the Taishi-do ( 大師 堂 ). In the Jibutsu-do there are sacred figures such as the Fudō-son ( 不 動 尊 ) and the Bishamon- th ( 毘 沙門 天 ).
