Burckhard Nedden

Burckhard Nedden (born January 19, 1944 ) is a German lawyer and data protection expert. From 1999 to 2006 he was the data protection officer for the state of Lower Saxony .

From 1963 Nedden studied law in Tübingen , Berlin and Göttingen , followed by the first state examination in 1968 and the second in 1973. Subsequently, Nedden worked in the Interior Ministry. From 1991 he was head of the department for spatial planning and regional planning, surveying and cadastral administration, organization and information and communication technology, from 1995 head of the administrative department and coordinator of state modernization and administrative reform in Lower Saxony. In June 1999 he was elected by the Lower Saxony state parliament as the state commissioner for data protection in Lower Saxony.

On January 1, 2006, the competencies of the Lower Saxony state data protection officer were severely curtailed: The data protection supervision of private companies was transferred to the Ministry of the Interior . Nedden, who had already announced his early departure from office in May 2005 in view of this decision, ended his active time as data protection officer on March 31, 2006. On June 30, 2006 he was succeeded by administrative lawyer Hans-Joachim Wahlbrink . On February 1, 2007, the data protection supervision of private companies was again transferred to the State Commissioner for Data Protection of Lower Saxony. Since August 2006 Nedden has been a member of the collegial board of the Humanist Union of Lower Saxony.
