Burel (tissue)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burel is a traditional wool fabric from Portugal .

It is considered to be the oldest handmade fabric from Portugal. Pure wool, primarily of the dark kind, is cleaned and combed, drawn, twisted, then hot compressed by heavy machines and then printed and / or embossed.

The name developed from the Latin bura via the Provençal burel .

Burel was developed and maintained in particular in the Beira and Trás-os-Montes regions . The mountainous regions merging into one another are located in the northern interior of the country, where sheep farming was traditionally important.

The fabric has seen a renaissance in recent years , and young designers have turned to the burel. Her work became well known and has already been presented in Germany. In Manteigas , in the middle of the Serra da Estrela , there is still one of the most important traditional burel factories, which has now adapted to the renewed demand. Today, the fabric is used in a variety of ways, from clothing to architecture and decorative elements to protective bags for tablets, cell phones, etc. a.
