Affnang Castle

The lost Affnang Castle is a lost moated castle in the municipality of Gaspoltshofen in the Grieskirchen district of Upper Austria near the Filialkirch Hl. Jakob (Affnang No. 1).

history

The seat was a wooden moated castle belonging to the Freising ministerial family of Affnang, which had been recorded since the 12th century . Of these, a Meinhardus de affenanc is known in 1204 ; a second and at the same time last Affnang is Heinrich von Affnang, who is mentioned as a witness in a deed of donation from the widow Heilwich von Wolfsegg in 1210 . In 1379 the castle came into the possession of the Starhembergers . At that time Affnang only seemed to be a court monkey and no longer a noble estate . In 1395, however, Hans der Asenhaimer appeared as the ducal fief of Affnang. From these the seat should then have come to the Oberbeimer of Gröming Castle . Also in 1459 it is said that “Colman Oberhaimer vnd Mathes have his brothers in fiefdom of the Sicz zu Nidern Affnang”. In 1489 Hans Oberheimer von Parz appears as a fiefdom holder. After that, the property seems to have been divided between different manors. An attack from the 17th century only mentions “ain old Burkhstall” , which at that time was still surrounded by a pond.

Affnang Castle today

The former lowland is completely leveled. According to local tradition, it was located below the subsidiary church of St. Jacob. At the location of the church, the original seat may possibly be assumed.
