history

Parz Castle after an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674

After the Pollheimers had acquired the Tegernbach castle and rule as well as the Grieskirchen market in 1398 , Sigmund Ludwig von Pollheim von Han (n) s Pürchinger bought the Parz rule in 1514 and incorporated it with the Tegernbach rule located about two kilometers to the northeast (from which the name the cadastral Pfleg of Schlüßlberg , the very old castle there is forfeited). Then Sigmund Ludwig von Pollheim had the old castle in Tegernbach demolished with the permission of Emperor Maximilian I and built a three-storey renaissance castle with extensive farm buildings, partly with its demolition material, next to the small moated castle Parz , which was initially called Neu-Tegernbach and which was later named after the village of Parz. Sigmund Ludwig von Pollheim's son of the same name (1531–1598) expanded the castle to its present form and established a spiritual center of Protestantism in Upper Austria.

After the death of the imperial treasurer and imperial court councilor Gundacker von Polheim (1575–1644), who had obtained town charter for Grieskirchen in 1613, Parz Palace was sold. In the period that followed, the Pálffy , Harrach and Verdenberg families owned briefly . In 1651 the castle and the rule of David Count Ungnad von Weissenwolff (1604–1672), a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece , bought. After the extinction of this noble family in 1961, the castle came across Antoinette Altgräfin of Salm-Reifferscheidt (1908-1962) and Karl Friedrich Maria Johann Mensdorff-Pouilly (1894-1981) in 1985 in the possession of Georg Spiegelfeld snow castle , which they restored and revitalized, whereby the 2010 state exhibition was a motivation.

The castle has been owned by the Willy Messerschmitt Foundation since 2010 . The festival and event halls are used for weddings, concerts and the like. Office space is also rented on all floors. In summer open-air events take place in the castle courtyard; the renaissance garden is accessible.

description

South side of the main wing with the oldest exposed frescoes

The castle consists of a three-storey main wing with a tower and two side wings. In 1987 large renaissance frescoes were discovered on the approximately 100 m long south facade. They were made on behalf of the Protestant Sigmund von Pollheim and their theme is the superiority of Protestantism over Catholicism. They were exposed with the support of the Messerschmitt Foundation. The scene of the passage through the Red Sea is the rare type of a denominational picture created as a mural . The Protestant people of God are persecuted by the Pharaoh in the form of the Pope, who is accompanied by hostile Turks and French in addition to the bishop and cardinal.
