The castle Freudenberg is a medieval lowland castle in Bassum , a town in the district of Diepholz in Lower Saxony .

investment

The Freudenburg was probably as so-called moth applied (Turmhügelburg) so that on one of a moat surrounding Warft a fortified, inhabited tower originated. Later the facility was enlarged for military or other purposes and the fortification ring was extended with new trenches.

history

The Freudenberg "Slot" was first mentioned in a document around 1388, but was probably built much earlier. The oldest spelling of the name is "Vroydenbergh". Count Otto III. von Hoya is believed to be the builder of the fortress.

After the Counts of Hoya died out (1582), Freudenberg and Freudenburg had an eventful history. Due to wars, pledges and disputes, there were frequent changes of ownership. Over the years, the buildings have undergone some changes, depending on the wishes of the residents.

From 1852 to 1974 the Freudenburg Castle served as the seat of the Freudenberg District Court (from 1879: Bassum District Court).

In 1967 the city of Bassum took over the entire Freudenburg site with the buildings from the state of Lower Saxony. The buildings were renovated and a landscaped park was created. A 9 × 5 m building was given to the Heimatverein as the Heimatstube.

Since 1993 the Freudenburg has been used by the Diepholz district and its adult education center as a seminar and conference center. Since the extension to include the renovated Vorwerk in 2009, it offers event space for 70 people. 24 rooms with 35 beds are available for overnight stays.
