Otto III. von Hoya († April 13, 1428 ) was the ruling Count of Hoya (Lower County) from 1383 to 1428 .

Otto was the son of Count Gerhard III. by Hoya and Jutta von Delmenhorst . In his first marriage Otto was married to Adelheid von Diepholz († 1383 ). In 1385 he married his second wife, Mechthild von Braunschweig-Lüneburg († 1433 ), a daughter of Duke Magnus II. Torquatus .

His reign was marked by political and military alliances. After his father in Lüneburg War of Succession ally of Guelph was Otto closed after his death the Ascanians on. After the battle of Winsen (Aller) , the end of the War of Succession, he was taken prisoner by the Guelph, from which he was ransomed by the city of Lüneburg with financial help. Between 1384 and 1408 he allied himself several times with Bremen . Several feuds followed until 1423 . a. with the Counts of Oldenburg , the Counts of Tecklenburg and the Bishops of Bremen .

Otto bought the county of Neubruchhausen and built the castles Freudenberg and Ehrenburg . In addition, he founded the citizen settlements Syke ( 1387 ) and Harpstedt ( 1396 ). There were already castles there that came into his possession through the purchase of Neubruchhausen. 1413 he gave bending the civil rights .

Otto found his final resting place in Martinskirche in Hoya .
