Wilhelm Iwan August Benedict Freiherr von Hodenberg (* May 7, 1786 in Hameln , † July 27, 1861 in Celle ) was a Hanover- German civil servant and politician.

His parents were Adolf Friedrich von Hodenberg (* February 11, 1755; † October 5, 1811) and his wife Friederike von Brummer (* September 29, 1762; † January 9, 1844).

Life

Wilhelm von Hodenberg first attended the Pagenschule at the Royal Electoral Court Marshal's Office in Hanover (since 1798 "Georgianum") and studied law at the University of Göttingen from 1804 to 1808 . From 1814–43 he was Drost in Lilienthal and Harburg , 1843 Landdrost in Lüneburg , 1850 director of the Royal Agricultural Society .

Politically, he worked in the Second Chamber from 1818 and in the First Chamber of the Kingdom of Hanover from 1832 to 1848 . He tried to mediate between the reactionary-absolutist and dogmatic-cramped liberalist currents of his time. He effectively advocated the idea of ​​self-government and state-building from the bottom up.

As a collector and editor of documents, he became important for the science of history.

He married Luise von Zesterfleth (1794–1827), a daughter of the president of the Verdenschen knighthood in Stade Christian Arnold von Zesterfleth (1750–1820). The couple had several children:
