from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Katharina von Hoya (* 1412 ; † February 18, 1474 ) was abbess of the Wienhausen monastery from 1433 to 1469 .

Katharina was the daughter of Count Otto III. von Hoya and was elected abbess by the convent of the Wienhausen monastery in 1433. At the beginning of her tenure, a lot of construction work began on the monastery. In 1469, Duke Otto zu Braunschweig-Lüneburg deposed Katharina after she refused to introduce reforms in her monastery. She was brought to the Derneburg monastery . In 1470 she came back to Wienhausen. In her absence, a reform-minded abbess was installed so that she did not return as head of the monastery. Katharina died in 1474 and was buried in the monastery 's All Saints' Chapel.

The Katharinen Market, a medieval market , has been held in Hoya every year since 1990 .
