The castle Friesenberg is the ruins of a hilltop castle from the 13th century in the municipality Wynigen in the canton of Bern .
Location and description
The castle ruins are located on a long hill, which is surrounded by a ring wall and moat and was additionally protected by a fore-castle .
Not quite three kilometers to the west are the ruins of Grimmenstein Castle .
history
The castle was the ancestral seat of the Fries , who were in the service of the Kyburger and held the castle rights of the city of Bern . Friesenberg Castle was used to control and protect the high path between Willisau and the Emmental . In 1344 the castle of a Kyburg ministerial was owned by the von Mattstetten family. In 1383 the castle was besieged and destroyed by the Bernese during the Burgdorf War.
