The Greifenstein Castle is a castle group consisting of the castles upper and lower Greifenstein Greifenstein. You are on a rock at 755  m above sea level. NHN above the Holzelfinger Tal near the municipality of Lichtenstein in the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg . Holzelfingen therefore also has a griffin in the coat of arms .

The hilltop castle was built by the knights of Greifenstein in the 12th century to protect the surrounding valleys, destroyed in the city war of Reutlingen in 1311 and was owned by Württemberg in 1355 . From the former castle Upper Greifenstein, whose keep right behind the moat was and around which apartment, storage and dungeon crowded that are still remnants Ringmauer received. About 150 m to the west of Untergreifenstein Castle, which is located on a narrow rock, small remains of walls and trenches can still be seen.
