Horst Saß (born April 20, 1934 in Greifswald ; † July 17, 2013 ) was a German soccer player , soccer coach and university professor .

Saß played since 1951 with the BSG unit Greifswald . In 1958 he belonged to SC Empor Rostock for one year , but where he only came to one use in the FDGB Cup on April 3, 1958 (Dynamo Schwerin - Empor Rostock 1: 7). He then played again for Einheit Greifswald and from then on belonged to the regular squad in the GDR league team as an all-round player until the winter of 1962. For professional reasons, Saß went to Schwerin for one and a half years, where he played for SC Traktor Schwerin , initially in the 2nd GDR League , and after its dissolution in 1963 in the third-class Schwerin district league . In the summer of 1964, Saß returned to Einheit Greifswald and announced his retirement from active football a year later. When the Greifswald in acute relegation problems in the 1965/66 season, he helped out again in six games as a defender. At the end of the season, the BSG unit was relegated, Saß took over the coaching post and led the team back to the GDR league in 1968. Mainly he devoted himself to his studies and achieved in 1967 at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University in Greifswald through his work “Investigations into the effectiveness of a focus on sports training in the 2nd and 3rd school years a contribution to the optimization of all-round physical and sports training in the Physical Education of the Lower School “the doctoral degree in pedagogy. Until 1969 he remained a research assistant at the Institute for Sports Science at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University. From October 1968 his team ran under the new name BSG Kernkraftwerk Nord .

For the 1969/70 season , Saß was coach at the upper division Hansa Rostock and was released from the University of Greifswald for three years. In three previous years he had reached the runner-up and the cup final under Gerhard Gläser , but with Saß he only finished twelfth in the league. With the integration of young players like Joachim Streich trying to rejuvenate the team, Saß and Hansa were eliminated in the 1969/70 trade fair cup, which was still under Lothar Wiesner in the previous season, in the second round against Inter Milan . After three more seasons with final placements in the lower half of the table from 1970/71 to 1972/73 Saß left FC Hansa.

From 1973, Saß held a position as senior assistant at the sports science section of the Wilhelm Pieck University Rostock (later Rostock University), in 1978 he completed his habilitation (title: "To optimize training and education in the sports game of football") He was Professor of Theory and Methodology of Sports Training at the University of Rostock (from 1993 Professor of Training Science ) and was also director of the Sports Science Section and the Institute for Sports Science at the University of Rostock until 1992 . In 1996 he retired from university. In the course of his scientific career, Saß dealt among other things with the topics of “education and training planning”, “football in school”, “relationships between sexual behavior and athletic performance in football”, “sporting stress in the connection of physical and technical sports Training “Observation of sports matches, preparation for competitions, physical education as well as performance records and performance checks in football. He contributed as an author to the works "Sportspiele" (1987), "Grundbegriffe der Sportspiele" (1989), "Lexikon Sportwissenschaft" (1993) and "Handbuch der Wettkampflehre" (1999).

In 2013, Saß died at the age of 79.
