Remains of the Grub Castle (also known as Grueb ) have been preserved in the district court of the city of Gmunden , located in the district of the same name in Upper Austria (today: Marktplatz 10).

history

The city of Gmunden is a planned establishment by the Styrian Otakare . A city generally included a city castle, farmsteads, monasteries, a parish church and a defensive system, all of these characteristics are not only given for Freistadt , Perg , Budweis , but also for Gmunden.

The remaining "Runde Eckturm" ( round tower ) in the courtyard of the district court in Gmunden can be seen as the remains of a former town castle . The "round corner tower" was one of the seven towers integrated into the former city wall. His loopholes were directed towards the city and Traunbrücke. The castle - an open space within the city wall - is mentioned for the first time in 1453, when Hanns the Schober sold "the tower and the two Hewser to Gmunden in the Stat" to the bailiff of Gmunden, Sebastian Ziegelhwaser. The actual city castle was built in 1520. The seat on the city wall was a safe point of defense for the city in times of danger and the last place of refuge for its residents. In 1666, its owners were instructed to always keep the house closed “because it is located on two sides of the city wall and itself serves as a protective barrier”. The castle was on a steep slope on the left bank of the Traun.

In 1820 the "kk Salinenärar" acquired the property and set up the "kk forest office", from 1850 the building accommodates the "kk district administration" and finally since 1854 (until today) the district court. The upheaval and demolition work for this took place between 1850 and 1860.
