The castle stable of Helfenstein Castle is located north of the Gratwein district of the Gratwein-Straßengel community in the Graz-Umgebung district of Styria . The history of the castle goes back to the first half of the 13th century. As early as the middle of the 13th century, just a few years after its construction, the castle was already destroyed.
Location
The castle stable of the Höhenburg is located on the eastern slope of the Gsollerkogel , west of the road from Gratwein to Kleinstübing and a little above the Mur . The remains of the castle can now be reached via a small Jägersteig.
history
The castle was probably built between 1236 and 1239 by order of Ottokar of Graz, who held Helfenstein as a Salzburg fief . Since Ottokar remained loyal to the emperor in the dispute between Emperor Friedrich II and Duke Friedrich II of Austria , he lost his office as burgrave . Frederick II of Austria had Helfenstein Castle destroyed in 1242 and gave Ottokar's fiefdoms to Rein monastery as a gift. This donation was confirmed in 1243 by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Eberhard von Regensberg .
The historian Hans Pirchegger wrote in 1923 that the castle was destroyed in 1242 because it was built in 1238 without a permit. Today only very sparse remains of the castle can be seen in the area.
