The Castle Hollenfels ( Luxembourgish : Buerg Huelmes ) is a rock castle on a crag in Eisch valley in the area of the Luxembourg community Helperknapp in Canton Mersch in Luxembourg .

history

The first written mention about Hollenfels Castle can be found in 1041. Isenbald von Holfels is named as the lord of the castle. Around 1238 a Eckhard von Hollenfels is mentioned. At this time, however, the residential and defense tower was not yet in place. In 1380 the construction of the five-story keep began , which is the only part of the original structure that has been preserved. From 1390 to 1477 the castle was divided up and belonged to both the Lords of Hollenfels and those of Autel / Elter. In 1477 a knight of Hollenfels is mentioned who fell at the Battle of Nancy. From 1480 to 1600 Hollenfels was partly held by the Lords Rollingen / de Raville, the Rhenish Lords von Greiffenclau and the Raugrafen von Salm.

Around 1600, Colonel Sebastian von Tynner and Hohenstein, who was in Spanish service, came into possession of part of the castle before buying the other parts in 1624. In 1632 the castle passed through inheritance to his sister-in-law Lucia van Hohenstein, widow of Pieter van Broeckhoven - a council from 's-Hertogenbosch in Brabant . Her sons left the property to Amalia von Solms in 1649 .

During the War of the Spanish Succession, Hollenfels was first besieged and conquered by French troops in 1681. Severe destruction of the place and the castle took place in 1683 when the Spanish troops attempted to recapture it. After the war the castle came into French possession. In 1691 a JB de Brias is named as lord of the castle, who from 1729 had a residential building in neo-baroque style, the so-called castle, built.

Hollenfels was raised to a county in 1787 and on February 21, 1787 Jean-Frédéric-Joseph de Brias was given the title of Count of Hollenfels. In 1818 his descendant Louis-Antoine sold the castle to the governor Joseph Thorn . The castle remained uninhabited from 1820 to 1920 and was left to decay. In 1920 the castle was restored by the Luxembourg architect Schoenberg. During the German occupation the castle was given to the Bund Deutscher Mädel and from 1945 to 1948 it was used as a camp for prisoners of war. The castle has been state-owned since 1948. Today there is a youth hostel here . In addition, the castle serves the Service National de Jeunesse as a location for youth activities.

The building

At the Castle Hollenfels is keep particularly striking. In total, it is 23 meters high and has a 16-meter high roof with a battlement . The base area measures 14 by 12.5 meters. To the right of the keep is a round tower with a preserved castle wall. The central room is the knight's hall, which served as a meeting point for the lords of the castle, in the tower. Two floors above this was probably a room for the lords of the castle. Nowadays you can still visit one of the medieval outhouses here .

The fountain

The fountain, through which a secret entrance leads, is also interesting. In the past it was possible to secretly supply the besieged castle with food or to evacuate it. The boards above the fountain were then pulled away from the unwanted visitor so that they either fell into the fountain or could not reach the castle immediately. Remnants of this passage can still be visited today.
