The castle Jerichow is the Burgstall a former Slavic castle walls or a later German castle in the town Jerichow in the east of Saxony-Anhalt . The remains of the castle are listed as a ground monument .
history
To protect the western border of their domain against the Germans, the Slavs built 983 castles consisting of earthen walls and wooden palisades after the uprising . Such a castle wall was also built in Jerichow directly on the Elbe , a current oxbow lake , at a ford . The castle was on the eastern bank of the Elbe. The side facing away from the Elbe was secured with an artificial river arm, so that Jerichow Castle was a moated castle .
The castle was first mentioned in 1144 in connection with the founding of the Jerichow Monastery . After the German reconquest of the area, the Jerichow Castle was built out of stone. Feudal lords from the 12th to the 14th centuries came from a de Jerichow family . After several changes of ownership, Jerichow Castle became the seat of a lordly office and in 1588 came into the possession of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg . In the course of the Thirty Years War it fell into disrepair.
Jerichow Castle had an approximately elliptical base area of around 70 meters east-west and 80 meters north-south. In a city view from 1655, a keep or a fortified tower can be seen . An official inheritance book entry from around 1680 describes: “The office takes its name from the old castle, which is located next to the little town towards the Elbe, is very desolate and desolate on buildings and there is a large square tower with an old wall, so Almost totally ruined and dilapidated ago. [...] The castle is surrounded by a double moat ”.
In 1769 the demolition of the curtain wall was approved. The material obtained was used to build a so-called silk house. The castle tower was removed at the beginning of the 19th century. Its materials were built into the churchyard wall . In 1893 the elevation of the castle stable was leveled and an urban park with trees was created.
