The castle Lötzen is a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Knights in the East Prussian city of Giżycko, today Giżycko . It was used to control the transition across the Masurian Lake District .

history

After the conquest of Prussia was over, Grand Master Dietrich von Altenburg recognized the strategic importance of Lötzen (similar to Hermann von Boyen , who for this reason had the Boyen Fortress built in the 19th century). The Johannisburger Heide in the southwest, the Masurian Lake District and the Rominter Heide in the northeast form a natural barrier that can only be passed by soldering on an isthmus between the Löwentinsee and the Mauersee .

As a result, the heather areas, which are actually forest areas, remained untouched. In Lötzen in 1340 - the first documentary mention is on November 20, 1340 - the wooden weir system from Prussian times was expanded. It was conquered and destroyed by the Lithuanians as early as 1365. In 1390 it was rebuilt as a stone building. During the Thirteen Years' War (1454–1466) the castle was badly damaged. In 1590 it was redesigned in the Renaissance style, which resulted in the gable. In the Duchy of Prussia , the castle became the seat of an official governor and thus an administrative center. It served the Prussian rulers as a hunting stay. In 1644 it was therefore enlarged. During the Swedish-Polish War (1656/57) it was damaged again.

Usage today

After 1945 the castle complex stood empty and was converted into a hotel in the 1960s . On May 24, 1979, the facility was placed under a preservation order. Between 2009 and 2011 the entire complex was renovated again and still serves as a hotel.
