The "White Tower" of Mojahn Castle

The castle Mojahn ( Latvian Mujānu pils ) is the ruin of a castle in what is now Latvia . According to the historical administrative division, it belonged to the Livonian parish of Wolmar .

description

The castle was built on the bridge over the Jumara River on the road from Lemsal to Wolmar on the edge of a small hill and belonged to vassals of the Bishop of Riga . Their ground plan corresponded to a typical camp fort with two cannon towers on the north side, which secured the facility to the open country, while the south side was protected by a high mountain slope. At its foot there is still the mill lake, which was created by damming, on the banks of which you can still find some wall remains from the former mill. The building used to protrude strongly from the castle wall.

The castle entrance was on the south-eastern side of the defense system, of whose main masonry the so-called “White Tower” has best preserved. You can also see the remains of a round tower at the northeast corner of the castle.

history

At the end of the 14th century, a manor was mentioned at the site of the castle . In 1503 the complex was first mentioned as the castle of the Riga Archdiocese . It changed hands several times during the Swedish-Polish Wars . During the Swedish occupation, King Gustav Adolf transferred it to Axel Oxenstierna in 1622 . In the Great Northern War the castle was destroyed Mojahn and has since become a ruin .
