Rositen Castle

The Rositen Castle ( Latvian Rēzeknes pilsdrupas ) was the seat of a bailiwick of the Livonian Order . The ruins are located in the center of Rēzekne ( Latvia ), a city in the center of historical Latgale . Today only fragments of the stone walls and the foundation on the old castle hill can be seen.

history

Plan of the castle, 1889

The order got this area under its control in 1264, after which the castle was probably built. The castle is located in a place that is well protected by nature, where elevation protection is complemented by water protection by the Rositensche Bach ( Rēzekne ). 17 bailiffs are known by name from 1348 to 1555. The castle had the neighboring castle Ludsen .

In 1558, during the Livonian War , Landmeister Johann Wilhelm von Fürstenberg pledged the castle to Sigismund II August . The castle was later occupied by the forces of Ivan the Terrible . After the war it was part of the Duchy of Livonia . During the Polish-Swedish war, the castle was occupied by Swedish troops in 1601. During the Second Northern War , a battle took place near the castle in 1656 and the castle was completely destroyed.

Building

On the west side of the castle ring there was a bridge in front of the gate tower and Burgstrasse led through a round outer bailey , from which the north-east wing of the main castle was accessible. To the south, towards a long kennel, are the remains of the wide, round main tower. The central point of defense of the main castle was a mighty donjon-like round tower, which took the entire western part under its protection.
