Saint-Sauveur-de-Cruzières Castle

The castle Saint-Sauveur-de-Cruzières ( French Château de Saint-Sauveur-de-Cruzières or Château de St. Sauveur de Cruzières ) is a castle above the town of Saint-Sauveur-de-Cruzières in Ardèche in France . It is popularly called La Tour de Cruzières ( German for  the tower ).

Castle complex

The beginnings of the castle complex go back to the Gallo-Roman era, when the mineral water spring located at this point was connected to a cistern that supplied the Roman villas in the valley . There is evidence of settlement around the source from prehistoric times, and the cistern is also considered to be the decisive criterion for the foundation of the castle at this point.

middle Ages

The castle complex was built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century with a view of the Katharerburg opposite , which is now destroyed and can only be seen as a ruin . After the order was banned, the castle became the property of the church. In the 14th century it became a priory under the first documented provost Raimond Raphael.

Templar castle in modern times

After the French Revolution , the castle complex was destroyed several times and (partially) rebuilt. The castle is now privately owned. After extensive renovation work , it can be rented as a holiday home.
