Setterich Castle

The castle Setterich was a Rhenish Wasserburg in Baesweiler district Setterich in North Rhine-Westphalia . Only the gatehouse built around 1640 remains of the castle . The remaining buildings were demolished around 1820.

history

The first traces of settlement in the immediate area of the former castle indicate a period of construction between the 10th century and the 12th century. The von Frentz and von Randerath families have been known as owners since the 13th century . In the middle of the 14th century at the latest, the castle became the property of Johann von Lovenberg, known as von Setterich. After his death, his daughter inherited the Setterich castle and manor and brought them into the possession of the von Reuschenberg family through her spouse . The noble residence remained in the possession of this noble clan for over 300 years before the castle passed to the von Coudenhoven family in the middle of the 18th century . Today a nursing home has been set up in the castle and in the adjacent buildings.

The castle was probably burned down around 1542 in connection with the Jülich feud . The main house ( Palas ), originally built of sandstone , was then replaced by a brick building.

Setterich Castle is already recorded on a map from the 16th century. However, the seat of the nobility is only shown in the Codex Welser around 1723 in the form of a sketch.
