Castrum Danorum

The Castrum Danorum or Tallinn Castle ( Estonian Toompea loss ) is the name of a castle founded by Danes in the 13th century , around which the city of Tallinn later emerged. The Coming Reval had its seat here for a long time.

A wooden fortress was built by the local Estonians as early as the 10th or 11th century AD on today's Toompea in Tallinn . The oldest (Finnish) sources speak of the name Kesoniemi , which suggests a settlement in summer. Later the Estonian name Lyndanisse (probably "Peninsula of the Linda ") is mentioned.

In June 1219 the fortress was taken by the Danish crusaders under the leadership of King Waldemar II . In the battle of lyndanisse a legend, the later should flag of Denmark , the Dannebrog , the Danes have promised a victory over the pagan Estonians.

After their military success and the occupation of the region, the Danes called the place in Latin Castrum Danorum , "Dänenburg". The current name Tallinn from an abbreviation of Taani linn is an Estonian translation of this term (controversial).

The Castrum Danorum was expanded as a stone fortress in the following decades. The first stone tower was built around 1220. From 1227 to 1237 the castle was owned by the Brothers of the Sword , who fortified it further. Some of the walls and towers of the castle on Tallinn Toompea (today the seat of the Estonian parliament ) can still be seen, including the defense tower Langer Hermann (built 1360–1370).
