Upcoming Reval
The Coming Reval was a Coming in the city of Tallinn (German name Reval) in Estonia , whose seat was in the Castrum Danorum .
It was first founded in 1234 by the Order of the Brothers of the Sword , after they had conquered the Danish castle Castrum Danorum and the surrounding countryside of Revele in 1227 and from 1230 onwards, Westphalian and Lower Saxon merchants settled below the castle hill.
Just a few years later, after the devastating defeat of the order in the Battle of Schaulen in September 1236 against the Shemites and Lithuanians , the Sword Brothers were forced to give up their independence in 1237 and, with the approval of the Pope, join the Teutonic Order . Due to the decreed provisions, North Estonia was returned to Denmark with the Coming Reval 1238.
In 1346, after the Teutonic Order had given him decisive help in the suppression of a great Estonian uprising, the Danish King Waldemar IV. Atterdag sold the crown rights in Estonia to the Teutonic Order in order to obtain funds to redeem the castles and lands pledged by his predecessors in Jutland , Funen and Zealand . The Order renewed the Coming Reval in the castle on the Cathedral Hill ( "Toompea") from Tallinn, the not to since 1248 lübischem municipal law belonged provided City Reval, but until 1878 an independent municipality remained.
