Werder Castle

The Werden Castle ( Estonian Virtsu Vasallilinus ) in Estonia is the ruin of a water castle in the municipality of Lääneranna near the village of Virtsu ( German  Werder ).

history

Probably around 1430 a vassal castle of the diocese Ösel-Wiek was built in Werder . It is first mentioned in written sources in 1465. It was probably used to monitor shipping traffic between the mainland and the Estonian islands. The castle was destroyed in 1533/34 during an armed conflict between the bishop of Ösel-Wiek Reinhold von Buxhoeveden and Wilhelm von Brandenburg , so that only a few of the foundation walls are preserved today. In 1536, the Wolmar Landtag expressly forbade the rebuilding of the fortress .
