Buxhoeveden was probably born around 1480 in the diocese of Dorpat in Livonia. On September 1, 1501, he was enrolled at the University of Rostock as "Reinoldus Bichteshoueden Dorptensis dioc." In winter 1506/07 he was in Rostock initially to Bakkalar doctorate in winter 1508/09 he finished his studies eventually a master's degree in canon law.
Buxhoeveden subsequently sought a career in the church and for this purpose stayed for a long time in Rome after his studies . There he was named Dean of the Oesel Church from November 1519. However, his return to Livonia did not take place until the spring of 1520. Returning there as dean and canon, Buxhoeveden became an important advisor and ambassador of the later Bishop of Riga Johannes Blankenfeld to Pope Leo X. In this capacity, Buxhoeveden stayed frequently in Rome.
In 1527, after the death of Bishop Johannes IV. Kievel von Ösel-Wiek, von Buxhoeveden could have been his successor, but since he had no corresponding influence, he was content to remain dean. Because only a few years later, on October 18, 1530, he was elected Bishop of Ösel-Wiek. Emperor Charles V confirmed his election in December 1531, Pope Clemens VII did so on August 3, 1532. As part of the ösel nobility wanted to see Reinhold's opponent Wilhelm von Brandenburg , coadjutor of the Riga bishop Thomas Schöning , as bishop, a fire flared up in 1532 Civil war continued until 1536. Reinhold was able to prevail in the end by raising large financial resources and with the help of his supporters.
In 1541 he completed the reconstruction of the Lohde Bishop's Castle and had his coat of arms stone affixed to the facade with this date. Nevertheless, Buxhoeveden resigned from office on July 13, 1541. With the support of the Brothers of the Knighthood of Christ of Livonia , he was able to appoint the Bishop of Courland Johann von Münchhausen as his successor.
Reinhold von Buxhoeveden died before May 7, 1557 (possibly on the 2nd) in his residence in Koluvere.
