List of bishops in the Kuressaare Episcopal Castle

Hermann (I./II.) Von Buxhoeveden (also Hermann I. von Bekeshoeveden or Hermann II. Von Buxhöwden; * 1230 ; † 1285 in Arensburg ) was bishop of Ösel-Wieck .

history

The history of the first bishops of Ösel-Wieck shows gaps and inconsistencies, because a Heinrich and a Hermann were named in the same period. Following the list of names in the Bishop's Castle of Arensburg, it must actually be Hermann. According to a document documented by Napiersky's Index I. “In 1277 a Hermann II (with the surname of Buxhöwden) Bishop of Ösel, was proven”. After the Teutonic Order had taken over the rule of the Brothers of the Sword in Estonia , the Archdiocese of Riga as well as the dioceses of Dorpat , Ösel and Kurland belonged to their province . The order master of the Teutonic Order was obliged to take an oath of obedience to the bishops of Riga, Dorpat and Ösel .
