history

Around 1591 Furukawa Hiroie (古 川 広 家; 1561-1620) began to build a castle on a hill by the sea, which he provided with a four-story castle tower (天 守 閣, Tenshukaku). Before he could finish the castle, he was transferred to Iwakuni in the province of Suō after the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 . The new lord of the castle was Nakamura Kazutada (中 村 一 忠; 1590–1609). Since he was still a child, the elder, Yokohama Naizen (横山 内 膳), took over the further expansion of the castle, which was completed in 1601.

1610 Katō Sasayasu (加藤 貞 泰; 1580-1623) lord of the castle. However, he was transferred to Ōzu in the province of Iyo in 1617 . A year later the castle fell to the Inaba-Ikeda, then in 1633 with the exchange of territories with the Bizen-Ikeda to the latter. In 1639, no lord of the castle, but the Arao (荒 尾 氏) was appointed as the castle administrator. After 1868 the castle fell to the new state and was given up. So today only the foundations of the entrances, walls and towers can be seen.

The castle, located on the 90 m high Minatoyama (湊 山) by the sea, is flanked in the southwest by a hill and in the north by the Iiyama (飯 山). On the land side in the west, the castle is protected by a moat .

You enter the castle from the west via the moat through the main gate (山門, Sanmon; H in the plan) or through the south gate (南門, Nanmon; S), also through the moat. First, on this lower level, you get to the storage buildings for rice and other necessities (yellow on the map). Through further gates you come to the 3rd castle area (三 の 丸, San-no-maru; 3). Buildings are not shown in the inserted view, but the apartments of the lord's closest employees are likely to have been located here. Above is the second castle area on the second level (二 の 丸, Ni-no-maru; 2). The residence, which is also not shown in the plan, may have been located here.

Then there are two steep paths up to the main castle area (本 丸, Honmaru; 1), with the fortification to Naizen-maru (内 膳 丸; 4) extending halfway up in the southwest . The central area at the top is protected by mighty walls, a castle tower (天 守 閣, Tenshukaku) and a second tower.
