The Klamleiten castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the district of the same name in the municipality of Alberndorf in the Urfahr-Umgebung district of Upper Austria . The ruin is to the right of the road leading from Reichenau to Riedegg on a rock spur that slopes down to the Gusen . There is no path from the Gusental to the ruins, but you have to walk wildly up the mountain slope from the hammer mill in Klamleiten.

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1292. 1408 the Tvrnlein pey der Gusen is mentioned. Presumably the fortification was used for road protection. Its destruction can be attributed to the Hussites , who invaded the Mühlviertel in 1427 and conquered and destroyed many castles. It is possible that it was not until 1477 by Emperor Friedrich III. destroyed.

Klammleiten castle ruins today

The complex consisted of a curtain wall and a mighty round tower . Half of this collapsed and probably had three floors, today only the beam holes of a first floor are left. An entrance used to be visible on the first floor. The masonry of the Söller is 3.50 meters thick. It is made of smooth stone on the inside and outside, the space in between is filled with rubble stones and mortar (cast masonry). The cuboids on the inside are slightly curved so that they form a circle.

Below the tower towards Gusen there are several terraces. On the top there was once the curtain wall, the foundations of which protrude around the tower. There were probably residential and farm buildings between the curtain wall and the tower, but these are hidden under the rubble. The slope is littered with partly hewn stones from the curtain wall. To the west, the castle was protected by a ditch .
