Kräheneck castle ruins

The Kräheneck castle ruins , formerly also called Creinegg , are the ruins of a spur castle on a mountain spur surrounded by the Nagold above the Weißenstein (Rabeneck) castle ruins and the castle path in the Pforzheim district of Dillweißstein in Baden-Württemberg .

The castle was built in the 11th century by the Lords of Weißenstein (formerly Lords of Kräheneck) and was first mentioned in 1194 in connection with the local nobility as Creinegg . The distance to the ruins of Weißenstein Castle below is just under 300 meters as the crow flies. Kräheneck was probably an incomplete defense structure for Weißenstein. This assumption is corroborated by the fact that Kräheneck had no farm buildings. The Kräheneck ruin is a shield wall castle in a spur location, which may have remained unfinished.

Today's view is characterized by a monumental shield wall , which is in front of a moat . The wall, which is up to ten meters high and almost four meters wide, is built from hammered red sandstone blocks . In the angled part of the wall in the northern area, a chamber with a loopholes and a spiral staircase has been preserved. Remains of a southern counterpart can be guessed at. To the side of the neck ditch is a noticeable step where the stones for the wall were broken.

The medieval fortification was renovated for the first time in 1883. The last renovation was in 1972.

The Kräheneck is already listed as an architectural monument in the 1936 register of monuments in the Pforzheim district.

The first castle festival was held there in 1928 and repeated several times until 1939. This tradition has been revived by associations in early summer for several years. In 2008 the third modern Kräheneck Summer Games took place.
