The Sonnegg castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle at 657  m above sea level. A. , on the so-called Schloßberg, about 100 m above the village of Sonnegg in the municipality of Sittersdorf in Carinthia .

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1267 as castrum Iounek and was one of the largest castles in Carinthia during its heyday. In 1444 Hans I. Ungnad von Weißenwolff was enfeoffed with Sonnegg Castle. It was in his family until 1622 when it fell to the House of Hesse . They sold the castle to Johann Andreas von Rosenberg in 1639 . In 1688 Valvasor had the opportunity to draw and describe the castle. Only two years later it was destroyed in a severe earthquake in 1690. A reconstruction was not done. Instead, the farm yard at the foot of the Schloßberg was expanded into a new residence, today 's Sonnegg Castle . It is still owned by the Orsini-Rosenberg family today .

The castle ruins, however, were left to the population as a quarry, which accelerated their decay. The remaining remains of the wall date from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period and are under monument protection .
