The Burgstall Holzöster is an abandoned hilltop castle in the district of the same name in the Franking community in the Braunau district .
history
The castle complex is said to have originated from a Roman watchtower. In 1150, an Ulricus Frenchinger is mentioned in a document from the Ranshofen Monastery . In 1378 the place is documented as Holczester. The Frankingers, who later became Counts Franking, had their castle on the top of a hill above the Holzöstersee . The castle was already in ruins in the 15th century. The castle was demolished by the soldiers of Duke Heinrich von Niederbayern . The lord of the castle Georg von Franking is said to have been taken prisoner.
Burgstall Holzöster today
A castle plateau can be seen from the complex. Two trenches can be seen, the remains of the wall can no longer be found. A sketch of Hugo von Preen's plan shows the exact archaeological findings.
The facility is not a listed building. Today it is integrated as station 6 in a “farmer's golf” game.
