The Holzöstersee (also: Holzösterersee) is a small moor lake in Upper Austria .

General

The lake belongs to the Oberinnviertler Seenplatte , a group of several small lakes (Holzöstersee, Heratinger See - also called Ibmer See - and Höllerersee ) - only these three are open for bathing and have been under nature protection since 1965, and the Huckinger Lakes are still without bathing in Weilhartsforst and the Seeleitensee near Moosdorf . The lake district was formed at the end of the last ice age when the glaciers retreated and the draining water was dammed by the moraine walls.

The Holzöstersee is a popular bathing lake because it reaches pleasant bathing temperatures early on due to its small size and water depth. It is also located in a depression between two ridges which, through wind protection, promote the rapid warming of the water. Its area is 90,000 m² and its maximum depth is 4.7 m. Its western bank turns into a swinging lawn moor (nature reserve), which also explains the brown color of the water. Despite the discoloration, however, water quality tests usually found good to very good water quality. The tourist development of the lake began in the 1950s and until the end of the century tourism became the main source of income for the community of Franking , on whose territory the lake is located. The tourism association was able to count up to 80,000 overnight stays, today (status: 2010) only about 30,000 overnight stays are counted per year, whereby the tourist season only extends from May to September.

In 1953 1500, in 1954 3000 strangers stayed in Franking. Viennese, Tyroleans, Vorarlbergers and even Swiss are among the guests.

One of the most famous guests of the Holzöstersee is Sophia Loren , who was a guest at the Seewirt in Holzöster in the 1970s. In the 1970s, some TV productions were shot at the lake and in the community.

Freetime activities

The lake is owned by the state of Upper Austria, which operates a bathing facility with a children's play area and beach volleyball court on the east bank. There is also a campsite there. On the west bank there is a swimming pool with cabins and a buffet. A boardwalk was laid through the moor with boards explaining the peculiarities of nature. The Holzöstersee is also a popular fishing spot. The fish population includes carp, tench, white fish (bream, rudd, roach), eel, pike, pikeperch and catfish.

The area around the lake also offers other recreational opportunities, such as cycling or hiking.
