history

Coat of arms of the Counts of Franking on a foundation plaque in the parish church

The name of the community goes back to the Old High German personal name Franko or Francho . The name was first mentioned in 1150, where an ulricus of franchingen is mentioned. The ancestral seat of the Lords of Franking was on the Burgstall, a hill on the Holzöstersee. Today this seat can no longer be seen.

Since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place was Bavarian until 1779 and came to Austria after the Treaty of Teschen with the Innviertel (then 'Innbaiern'). In the course of the Josephine reforms, Franking was separated from the mother parish of Ostermiething in 1785 and became an independent parish . Briefly Bavarian again during the Napoleonic Wars , since 1814 it has finally belonged to Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place. During the occupation until 1955, Franking was in the American zone.

In the mid-1950s, the first efforts to establish summer tourism were made. A bathing establishment with cabins and a buffet was built on the Holzöstersee.
