coat of arms

Official description of the municipal coat of arms : diagonally divided; above in silver a blue helmet, below in blue a golden peasant hat with a feather. The community colors are white and blue.

The municipal coat of arms , awarded in 1975, refers with the peasant and knightly headgear to the verse novella Meier Helmbrecht written by Wernher the Gartenaere between 1250 and 1280 . This describes the development of the farmer's son Helmbrecht to a robber baron and his terrible end. According to a tradition, the scene of the action is the area of the Weilharts forest , in Gilgenberg the “Helmbrechtshof” has been traceable since the 14th century.

history

Settlement of the Gilgenberg area goes back at least 2500 years. The earliest finds are attributed to the Hallstatt culture. Barrows and a jug found in 1995 date from this time. A manor from Roman times is likely to have been located near the Hallstatt sites. The settlement may have been interrupted during the migration period.

The beginnings of today's Gilgenberg go back to the 12th century. The church of Gilgenberg, consecrated to St. Aegidius, is mentioned for the first time in 1195. The proper names of the first documents reveal a Bavarian population. After the fall of the Counts of Burghausen, the feudal lord was the Bavarian duke. His local deputy was the rent manager von Burghausen.

Since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place was Bavarian until 1779 and came to Austria after the Treaty of Teschen with the Innviertel (then 'Innbaiern'). Briefly Bavarian again during the Napoleonic Wars , since 1814 it has finally belonged to Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.
