The Castle Kirchberg is an Outbound medieval castle in Dingelstädt in the district Eichsfeld in Thuringia .

location

The former hilltop castle is located on a flat mountain ledge, the Kerbschen Berg , west of Dingelstädt on the boundary with Kefferhausen . Today's county road K220 leads from Dingelstädt to Kefferhausen and passes immediately to the south.

history

The history of the location goes back to the prehistoric times , presumably there was also a Germanic place of worship that belonged to the Gaugericht Dingelstädt. Two row graves with weapons from the 8th century were found at Kerbschen Berg in 1906, including a sword of the Immenstedt type. It cannot be proven whether these finds are related to the castle complex. From the 9th to 10th centuries, a larger people's castle or refuge can be proven, a section wall separates the mountain ledge from the mountain slope. A St. Martin's Church probably already belonged to this prehistoric castle.

Within this section there is a smaller circular wall with a diameter of about 110 meters, which was built between the 9th and 11th centuries. It is possible that the smaller round wall was built into the larger complex at a later time. It was probably built by the Lords of Kirchberg , who can be traced back to the 12th to the 15th century and who also owned Burgmann's seats at Gleichenstein Castle . Later the area came into the possession of the Counts of Gleichen and in 1294 to the Archdiocese of Mainz . There is no evidence of possible permanent buildings in the Herrenburg, with the recent construction of the Franciscan monastery these can no longer be proven.

The former village of Kirchberg to the north and the Kerbsche mill on the Unstrut also belonged to the castle . It is not known when the castle and the village were abandoned. Around 1800 there were still traces of fortifications.
