The castle Rudolfstein is an Outbound Spur castle on 325 m above sea level. NN named after Rudolf Schenk von Vargula , one of the most respected Thuringian knights and court officials (cupbearer) of the Thuringian landgraves. The castle is a ground monument in the southern urban area of Eisenach ; it is located on a prominent rock ledge approx. 1500 m southeast of the Wartburg above the so-called "milk room".
history
In the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession (1247–1263), fighting over the Wartburg and the possession of the city of Eisenach took place from 1260 to January 1262. At the Wartburg, a Wettin garrison was able to hold out against the besiegers (Braunschweig and Hessian troops, reinforced by the Eisenach vigilante) with massive support from the former Ludovingian ministerials . To support them, the Landgrave Ministerial Rudolf Schenk von Vargula had a castle-like fortification or watchtower built in an exposed place above the valley and Nürnberger Straße, which also served to observe the enemy siege castles of Eisenacher Burg and Frauenburg on the opposite side of the valley .
Structural matters
The Rudolfstein castle was only about 70 × 40 m in area. The only verifiable access was through a now filled natural crevice in the south. A double wall trench fortification, presumably reinforced with a wooden picket fence , secured this path. Little space was left inside for buildings. A defense or watchtower and attached log houses can be assumed, but the surface of the area has meanwhile been severely eroded . The “Rudolfsborn”, a nearby spring, was used to supply water.
