The castle staircase is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 30 meter long castle staircase is located in the northwestern part of the old town island in the Marien-Magdalenen quarter . It connects the corner of Kleine Burgstrasse / Hinter der Burg with the Kleine Altefähre .

history

The castle staircase was first mentioned in a document in 1415 with the Latin name Apud gradus prope urbem (at the staircase near the fortified settlement). In 1419 the name was By der Borgstraten , whereas in 1438 it was Gradus praedicatorum ( Preacher's Staircase , derived from the Dominicans who lived in the castle monastery and were known as Fratres Praedicatorum - preacher brothers ). The name Borchtreppe was recorded in 1614 , and the current street name was officially established in 1852. The names referring to a castle refer to the castle at the northern end of the old town, which was destroyed in 1227 and which also gave its name to the castle gate , castle monastery , Kleine Burgstrasse , Große Burgstrasse and Hinter der Burg .

particularities

The castle staircase occupies a unique position among the streets of Lübeck, as it is not a street in the usual sense, but actually a steep, approximately three meter wide staircase with natural stone steps and four intermediate landings . Only on the south side there are buildings that north side is occupied by the brick - retaining wall of the castle monastery.

Despite these peculiarities, the castle staircase is expressly dedicated as a street and also forms the postal address of the houses located on it.
