Behind the castle is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 70 meter long street Hinter der Burg is located in the north-western part of the old town island in the Marien-Magdalenen quarter . It runs in an east-west direction and connects the Große Burgstraße with the Kleine Burgstraße and the castle stairs .

history

The road in 1288 with the first mentioned in documents Latin name Juxta fratres predicatorum (In addition to the preacher monks, that the since 1227 in Burgkloster resident Dominicans ). In 1299, however, the name is Apud sanctam Mariam Magdalenam (in the case of St. Maria Magdalena , based on the St. Maria Magdalena church of the castle monastery, also known as the castle church, which is directly adjacent to the street), and in 1337 Ex oppositio fratrum predicatorum (opposite the Preacher monks). In 1470 the Low German name Tegen den Prediger Closter (next to the Predigerkloster) is documented, in 1480 By der Borch ( near the castle), 1486 Tegen der Borchkerken over (opposite the castle church) and 1513 Achter der Borchkerken (behind the castle church). The current name was officially established in 1852.

The names referring to a castle refer to the castle at the northern end of the old town, which was destroyed in 1227 and which gave its name to the castle gate , castle monastery , Kleine Burgstrasse , Große Burgstrasse and castle stairs .

The brick-Gothic Magdalenen Castle Church, which had been the defining element of the street for centuries, was demolished in 1818 after its dilapidation and partial collapse made it appear dangerous. The property lay fallow until the school building was built in 1874.

Numerous remains of the former castle monastery that date back to the early 14th century have been integrated into the school building. Today the Burgschule is part of the Ernestinenschule and is used as a building for the upper level.
