The corner house Hinter der Burg 15 is a listed brick Gothic building in Lübeck's old town . It is connected to the house at Kleine Burgstrasse 1 . Both were destroyed in a fire on the night of June 3rd to 4th, 2017.

Ownership story

The traditional history of ownership of the property and building begins in 1288, when Lübeck councilor Vromold von Vifhusen sold two properties under the current street name Hinter der Burg 11-15 in 1288 . In 1337, councilor Hermann Morneweg reunited these plots with the large master plot at Grosse Burgstrasse 30-36 , only to be sold again as individual plots by him and his heirs. In 1472 the property behind the castle 11–15 became the property of councilor Hinrich Constin and passed to councilor Volmar Warendorp before his death in 1481 . His son, the Lübeck canon Bruno Warendorp , donated the property to the St. Anne's Monastery in Lübeck in 1515, and the property remained in their possession for more than a hundred years. In 1776 the property was assessed as a residential and junk house, i.e. used by a shopkeeper.

The house at Kleine Burgstrasse 1, which is now connected to the house Hinter der Burg 15, was also built in 1291. There is evidence of a change of ownership in 1483, when the brotherhood of Lübeck riding servants received the house as a legacy . She sold Kleine Burgstrasse 1 in 1579.

Building history

The corner house is a medieval end-of-terrace house and stands under one roof with the houses in Kleine Burgstrasse 1-11, which was dendrologically dated to 1291. The Gothic facade behind the castle dates from the end of the 15th century. The previously existing stepped gable was removed around 1800. In this context, the simple classicist interior, which can still be seen in the beginning, was probably created.

The house has been a listed building since at least the early 1970s. The house has been renovated for several years by its private owner with the support of funds from the Possehl Foundation , together with the recently connected neighboring house at Kleine Burgstrasse 1 . In the course of the renovation, the two houses are to become independent again. On the night of June 3rd to 4th, 2017, a fire destroyed both houses. It may have been arson.
