Buried Alive (also known as Experience the Experience of Being Buried Alive and Lebendig Buried ) is a performance series by the Austrian art and theory group monochrom . The basic concept is to offer volunteer participants the opportunity to be buried alive in a coffin underground for fifteen minutes . As a supporting program, monochrom offers lectures on the scientific history of ascertaining death and the medical cultural history of premature burial. The series has sparked controversy .

Background and Philosophy

monochrom founder Johannes Grenzfurthner explained that the performance series should start discussions about death and death culture, medical and scientific myths and the sensationalism of the mass media .

“Being buried alive is a fine example of the interaction between media, technology and society. There was such great hysteria over being buried alive more than 150 years ago mainly because many magazines reported about it. That was cheap content that people enjoyed reading. Edgar Allen Poe also addressed this. The media hype has followed a technology hype. Industry has developed coffin air systems and the like. We wanted to recreate that and offered people the opportunity to experience it themselves - "Experience the Experience of Being Buried Alive". "

-

Grenzfurthner continues to say that one of the inspirations for the performance series was the desire to deal with his claustrophobic tendencies.

The performance series is one of the group's most famous projects. Over the years it has also been repeated on TV shows such as Joko versus Klaas on Pro7 and Herr Ostrowski sucht das Glück on ORF (with Michael Ostrowski ).

Buried Alive Tour

The first public performance burials were organized in 2005, 2006 and 2007 as part of a North American tour ( Experience the Experience ). People in Los Angeles (in the Machine Project gallery ), San Francisco , Vancouver and Toronto took advantage of the opportunity. Cell phones, flashlights, or other devices were not allowed into the coffin. There was no opportunity to come into contact with the outside world while staying in the coffin. The participants had to sign a written declaration of consent that was drawn up with lawyers beforehand. As an introduction, members of monochrom disguised as gravedigger gave a 45-minute lecture on the history of premature burial and presented the audience as "Death Jockeys" with a music program consisting of funeral marches and songs about death from all over the world.

As of 2005, about 500 people of Monochrome have been buried alive. (In 2013 the booth was 300.)

Six Feet Under Club

Preparations for the monochrome "Six Feet Under Club" (2010)

In 2010, monochrom updated the original concept and created the Six Feet Under Club . Couples could voluntarily let themselves be buried in a coffin to have sex in it. In a press release, monochrom stated that it was an "extremely private and intimate" room that would now be available to sex partners. The coffin "is also a reminder of the social norm of exclusive couple bonding until death do us part," they add satirically. On request was a night vision - Cam are activated, which was befestig in the coffin, to the events in the coffin on a screen to project. The scenario preserved the "intimacy of a private moment" while at the same time it was possible to move the "private act" into public space. monochrome's performance can be seen as an absurd parody of pornographic cinema or as an investigation into the importance of sexual privacy .

The performance was repeated in 2013 and 2014 in the Vienna Club Schwelle 7 .

Buried Alive (permanent installation)

Since 2011 monochrom has had a permanent "grave site" in the sculpture garden of the Lower Austrian art space VSL Lindabrunn .
