Burmönken is a cluster of settlements . It is located on the edge of the former Harle Bay on a small ridge, which is surrounded on three sides by low lands, which used to be mostly flooded in winter. Today the village belongs to the Wittmund district of Leerhafe .

history

Burmönken is a very old residential area that appears as a Bure in the documents as early as 1300 . East of the settlement there was a Johanniterkommende with a church from around 1300 until the 16th century . Little of this remained, however. The buildings were burned down by the "Black Guard" in 1514 during the Saxon feud . After that, the Coming Party dissolved by 1530 at the latest. From then on, the residents of the surrounding villages used the desolate buildings as a quarry, so that they disappeared piece by piece. The church was probably torn down in 1558 and the church was removed in the 19th century. The name of the village (meaning: peasantry with the monks), on whose territory the settlement of the knightly order was located, still reminds of its existence.

In 1811 there were 67 people living in Burmönken. In 1823 there were 60 inhabitants, who were spread over 13 residential buildings.
